Study Abroad for Art, Theory, Practice Majors

Can I study abroad as an Art, Theory and Practice major or minor?

YES! Many Art Theory and Practice majors and minors can and do study abroad during their time at Northwestern.

Student Perspective

"Studying art abroad can expand a student’s understanding and awareness of the histories, issues and concepts that bear on the direction and role of the visual arts in our culture today."

When can I study abroad as an Art Theory and Practice major or minor?

ATP majors can study abroad at any point during their time at Northwestern, except for spring quarter of senior year when ATP majors enroll in 360 Senior Critique and work on the Senior Exhibition.

ATP minors can study abroad at any point in their time at Northwestern. Students should be aware that it can take 2-4 months to receive a transcript from study abroad. If you are studying abroad during your final quarter at Northwestern, this will likely delay your actual date of graduation.

What classes can I take abroad?

A course taken during study abroad must satisfy the curriculum of the equivalent course inasmuch as it achieves the needs of the student’s focus.

Students can also take courses outside Art Theory and Practice to help fulfill other degree requirements, learn or improve on a language, or just to take advantage of the opportunity to learn something new that is not offered at Northwestern.

You can read more about academic planning and choosing courses abroad on the GLO website.

What type of credit can I get from study abroad?

ATP will accept up to, but not more than, 3 classes of study-abroad credit toward the major; and up to, but not more than, 1 class of study-abroad credit toward the minor. When applying for study abroad, an ATP major or minor needs to submit course titles, course numbers and course descriptions to the ATP Director of Undergraduate Studies or an ATP academic advisor in order to seek prior approval to take these courses for ATP credit.

Your Art Theory and Practice adviser can help you identify what distribution requirements or major or minor credit could be best taken abroad and your GLO adviser can help you identify programs that offer these types of credit.
