Winter in Evanston/Chicago: Tips for Staying Warm, Safe, and Connected
’Tis the season when it’s cold outside and extra warm in your classrooms. Winter in Evanston is all about layers and quality material. With the right clothing, information, and mindset, winter can be both manageable and genuinely enjoyable. Below you can find tips from a Chicagoan on how to not only survive but thrive during the winter season.
Create a Cozy Winter Space
Winter in Evanston can feel long, but it’s also a great time to slow down, get comfortable, and build routines that support your well-being. The Scandinavian idea of hygge finding comfort in simple, everyday moments can be especially helpful during colder months. Adding small touches like warm lighting, a soft blanket, hot tea, music, or even inviting a friend over for a relaxed meal can make your space feel welcoming and help brighten darker days.
Many students find it grounding to build a few consistent habits such as taking a short walk during daylight hours, journaling, calling family or friends, or scheduling one fun activity each week. These rituals don’t need to be big, they’re meant to bring steadiness, warmth, and connection into everyday life.
Staying productive and emotionally balanced during winter is also important. Shorter days and less sunlight can affect mood and focus, so try studying in warm, bright spaces like the library, Norris, or a favorite coffee shop; break tasks into small steps; or set up study groups for accountability. Light therapy lamps can also help maintain energy in the winter look for UV-free lamps of about 10,000 lux and use them in the morning for 20–30 minutes. And remember, you’re not alone. Northwestern has many resources to support you during winter, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Enrichment Services (SES), Religious & Spiritual Life, Northwestern Recreation, and the University Libraries. Taking small steps to care for your space, your routines, and your well-being can make a big difference in how you experience winter here.
What to Wear
Here’s a great guide on how to layer like a pro: What to Wear in Chicago in the Winter
- Dress in layers — base layers help regulate body temperature as you move between outdoors and heated buildings.
- Keep feet dry with warm socks and waterproof footwear.
- Wear gloves and a hat or earmuffs to protect hands and ears from windchill.
- Bring a waterproof outer layer when snow or rain is expected.
Where to Buy Winter Clothing
You don’t need to arrive with a full winter wardrobe, there are many places near Northwestern to find warm layers, coats, boots, and accessories.
- Westfield Old Orchard (Skokie) – A large outdoor mall with many clothing and outdoor brands where you can buy winter coats, boots, and base layers. Also, it's easy to get to on public transportation, it's less than a 30-minute bus ride on the 201!

Know Common Winter Weather Terms
- Freezing Rain: It looks like regular rain but freezes upon contact. This can cause ice buildup on trees and power lines and makes all surfaces extremely slippery. Wear shoes with good tread and walk like a penguin to avoid injuries.
- Polar Vortex / Wind Chill: A polar vortex can bring extremely cold temperatures for several days. Limit time outdoors, and if you must be outside, cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite. Wind chill impacts the “feels-like” temperature. A 10 degree day can feel like -20 when factoring in wind chill.
- Blizzard: Heavy snow combined with strong wind, causing low visibility and hazardous travel.
- Dibs: a highly debated Chicago tradition, are there dibs or aren't there dibs. If you don't know what dibs means, read more here: How Did Dibs Become a Thing?
University Closures: Northwestern rarely closes due to weather. If it does, you will receive a Winter Alert (make sure you are signed up for AlertNU). Professors will contact you directly if class is canceled due to inclement weather.
