2026 Travel Guidance

Only you can decide if traveling is the best decision for you. To make this determination, be certain to monitor the Northwestern Office of International Student and Scholar Services (OISS) newsletters and updates webpage as well as the University’s Responding to Federal Policies website, which includes a section dedicated to travel and immigration. If your country is impacted by last year’s June 4 and Dec. 16 Presidential Proclamations, leaving the U.S. while you are maintaining your status is not recommended. It is important to always be aware of updates and the latest developments regarding federal travel guidance or restrictions. Some additional considerations:

  • A valid visa does not guarantee entry to the U.S.
  • If you need a new visa while you are outside the U.S., consulates each have their own policies and processing times. Since September 2025, you are required to appear in person for your interview. It is also required that you attend your appointment in your country of nationality or residence. Additionally, all visa applicants (F/J/H) are subject to “administrative reviews,” which are likely to include social media screening and vetting. Decision times on visa applications are not guaranteed. Over the past year, consulate delays have increased. As a result, some Northwestern students and scholars who traveled abroad have not been able to return in time to start the quarter/work responsibilities and, in turn, had to take a leave of absence.
  • Travel bans/restrictions have been enacted with little to no advance notice, which makes travel unpredictable.
  • If you have ever been arrested or charged with a crime, you may wish to consult with an immigration attorney before departing the U.S., as we have seen an increase in visa revocations on this basis.

Documentation while in the U.S.

Inside the U.S., you should carry your original immigration documentation.

  • F-1 / J-1 student visa holders should carry:

    • Visa

    • Most recent I-94 (downloaded and printed)
  • H-1B, E-3, O-1, TN, and J-1 scholar visa holders should carry:

    • I-797 Receipt Notice, if still pending approval (H-1B, O-1, TN)
