Unit Leaders

As a unit leader you are tasked to manage other managers and influence across units and functions at Northwestern. To support and guide you in those efforts, we’ve partnered with Kellogg School of Management Executive Education, to offer 2 programs that focus on Leading Change and driving and sustaining change at the University while maximizing engagement and productivity.

Leading Change

Leading Change is a highly-rated professional development program for staff leaders who are managers of managers or a manager who has a broad range of responsibilities involving teamwork and influence across units and functions at Northwestern. Since 2006, more than 350 members of the community have participated in the program. The program is offered by Kellogg School of Management Executive Education in partnership with the Office of Human Resources, and features a series of four full-day workshops at the Allen Center. Class sessions are led by Kellogg faculty.

The focus of the program is on leading change – how University Leaders can continue to drive and sustain change at the University while maximizing engagement and productivity.

Leading Change offers a unique opportunity for you to elevate your leadership and learn alongside peers across schools and units, while building a collaborative network of University Leaders.

Enrollment

Leading Change enrollment consists of a nomination process. Lead Administrators nominate a number of people in their school or unit who meet the criteria and are strong candidates for the workshop. The criteria include:

  • A manager of managers or a manager who has a broad range of responsibilities involving teamwork and influence
  • PEX of achieving or higher
  • Salary grade of 10 or higher, ITS 79 or Lib 2

Leader as Coach

For several years, Leading Change (formerly Staff Leadership) at Northwestern has provided high-performing leaders with the tools to build out their networks, develop their leadership skills, and connect with Northwestern executive leaders.

Now, we are augmenting Leading Change with next-level learning for program alumni. This initiative will deepen participants' engagement and leadership capabilities, which will have a multiplier effect on professional development and ultimately the performance of alumni's teams.

Program summary

In coordination with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, we are offering participants a two-day Leader as Coach workshop. Participants' managers, as sponsors, are expected to attend the morning of the first day.

How to participate

Leader as Coach is open to 60 program alumni who can commit to attending both workshops in their entirety. Participants also will be asked to complete preparatory workshop materials.

Initiative goals

Leader as Coach offers Staff Leadership or Leading Change alumni the opportunity to:

  • Build stronger skills in coaching others
  • Enhance their career growth in current and new roles.
  • Increase networking and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Maximize the performance and professional development of their team members.
