Darkroom, Rock Painting, & Sewing

Darkroom Memberships

Now accepting 1-day and quarterly memberships. For more information or questions, please email articastudios@u.northwestern.edu.

Darkroom per visit (2-4 hours)
Fee:  $15 for NU Students/Affiliates
$25 for Non-NU community members

Quarterly Pass (up to 7 visits)
Fee:  $100 for NU Students/Affiliates
$170 for Non-NU community members

Purchasing a 1-Visit or Quarterly Membership

Email the Darkroom Supervisor at articastudios@u.northwestern.edu to request a membership and the required online exam.
  • Once reviewed, the darkroom supervisor will confirm if your exam was passed or not. 
  • If passed, the darkroom supervisor will coordinate a time to meet you in ARTica for a darkroom tour and confirm your quarterly schedule. 
  • Once all steps are complete, you can pay for your membership and are granted access to the darkroom on your pre-determined dates as coordinated with the supervisor.

  • Chemicals for film and paper processing
  • Equipment for film development
  • Equipment for paper development 
What's not provided:
  • Photo paper - all members must plan to bring their own
  • Scanner
  • Please note that only black and white photo development is accepted in the ARTica Darkroom.

Rock Painting Kits

Supply kits for painting The Rock can be reserved through Artica. Fees must be paid in-studio at Artica with credit, debit, or chartstring (for NU staff/faculty).

Note: The Rock Painting Kit reservation through Artica is for materials only, not a reservation for your group to paint the Rock. The Rock Plaza, the area around The Rock, is also reservable as an Outdoor Event Space. 

Cost
Rock Painting Kit Fees
All Groups $99 per kit
Painting Kits Include
  • (1) Choice of base color of the rock
  • Up to (3) additional colors
  • Additional paints can be made available for an additional $12 fee. Limit of (2) colors.  
Reservation Requirements
  • All materials provided must come back clean and, in the caddy provided. Groups are subject to a $25 cleaning fee if this is complete upon drop-off.  
  • The Rock Kit rental period is 24 hours only  
  • Preference will be given to reservations made (1) week in advance

  • (1) Kit with rotary cutter, fabric scissors, and pins
Out-Of Studio Reservations  $15 / day
Reservation includes:
  • (1) Working machine
  • (3) Needles
  • (1) Bobbin spool
Out-of-studio use requires approval in advance. You must know how to properly work a sewing machine.  Please email articastudios@u.northwestern.edu for approval. 
Please Note:
  • We do not provide thread or fabric.  
  • Our machines must be handled with care. If the machine is returned with damaged or pieces missing, you will be charged with repair or replacement.

*Please note: Sewing skill is required to rent or use the sewing machine in-studio. Only select staff are trained to assist, and we cannot guarantee help during your visit and/or upon renting the machine to take home.
