Big Ten Network Tailgate Show Returns to Northwestern

Join the Big Ten Network Tailgate on 10/5 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on the Lakefill. Free for students with free breakfast (while supplies last!).


ASG Senate Election

Voting begins 10/4 at 5 PM and ends 10/7 at 5 PM

The ASG Senate Election is from 10/4 at 5 PM to 10/7 at 5 PM! Petitions to get on the ballot are due at midnight tonight. Look for an email on Friday to vote for your representatives. If you have questions, email or direct message us on Instagram.


 

Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month Dining Celebration

10/8, 5-8 PM, All Dining Halls

We will celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month with a menu featuring recipes inspired by Virgilio Martinez’s The Latin American Cookbook. Visit any dining hall to scan and win a copy.

Join us at Allison Dining Hall for treats from local Mekato’s Colombian Bakery. DJ Corey Bless will be playing an eclectic mix of music from all across Latin America and have performances from AfriCaribe and Mariachi Northwestern.


Ombuds Day Open House

The Office of the Ombudsperson invites the Northwestern University community to celebrate their 3rd annual Ombuds Day Open House. This event is an excellent opportunity to meet University Ombudsperson Sarah Klaper, Associate Ombudsperson Kamaria Porter, and Program Coordinator Carrie Thomas. Spend time this fall at the Block Museum of Art! Our event calendar provides information about our current exhibitions and upcoming public programs, such as film screenings, artist conversations, and student-led, interactive talks in the galleries. 


Join the Alice Millar Chapel Choir

Chapel Choir is an auditioned mixed chorus open to all Northwestern students. The choir rehearses Tuesdays from 4-5:40 PM and Thursdays from 4-5:10 PM, with rehearsals or performances most Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Auditions will consist of vocalization and basic sight-singing; auditionees are welcome to bring a solo selection to sing (an accompanist is provided), though this is not required. For questions or to arrange an audition, contact Dr. Stephen Alltop.

Family Weekend 2024 is set for November 8–10, filled with exciting events including The Great Game Digital Adventure, Faculty Lectures, and a performance by The Second City.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

October 6, 3-4 PM, Jefferson (Thomas) Memorial Park

The Chicago City-Wide Symphony Orchestra, housed out of the Jefferson Park fieldhouse, will perform classical music for their first concert of the season! Free, and everyone is welcome.


EVANSTON

Big Bite Night

October 6, 3-5 PM, Downtown Evanston

All first-year and transfer students are invited to take a self-guided food tour of Downtown Evanston. Participating restaurants will set up bite-sized samples on tables outside (or inside) so that students can visit each restaurant and try out the food! All students must present their Northwestern Wildcard to participate in the event!

October 6, 12-5 PM, 1800 Maple Avenue, on the 5th floor of the Maple Parking Garage

Shop direct from artists, artisans and makers! Outdoors, in a covered parking garage, this market features hundreds of unique and one-of-a-kind handmade goods, such as art, crafts, wearables, jewelry, stationary, and handbags.


Used Bike Sale

October 7, 3:30-5 PM, Art Circle outside of the Block Museum

Stop by and purchase a used bike refurbished by the Recyclary, a local educational bike shop that promotes sustainability by giving access to tools, skills, and opportunities for collaboration. Sponsored by Norris Outdoors.

HPaW's Opioid Overdose Prevention & Naloxone Training

Searle Hall, Student Services Building, 633 Emerson St

This one-hour training is for students interested in being trained to administer Narcan (naloxone). Attendees will learn how to recognize signs of an opioid overdose, identify when it is appropriate to use Narcan, administer Narcan to an individual they believe is experiencing an overdose, and identify additional emergency steps to take. Upon completion of the training, all attendees will receive a two-pack of Narcan.


mindfulNU Fall Cohort

Join the Fall ’24 cohort of mindfulNU, an evidence-based approach to exploring meditation and mindfulness in an environment of relational, experiential, and reflective learning. Group practices include sitting, walking, loving-kindness meditation, writing, and group sharing. MindfulNU is co-led by staff and students.


 

Apply to Promote Equity in Early Education with Jumpstart

Applications due 10/6

Make a difference in a young person's life while having fun! Join Jumpstart as a Corps Member and spend the year teaching literacy and social-emotional skills to preschoolers in Evanston and Rogers Park. Gain classroom experience, develop leadership skills, and work with like-minded Northwestern peers. Members commit to 300 hours over the academic year and earn a $1,290 education award. Federal Work Study can help students earn $15/hour. Apply by October 6th!


DeBerry Civic Scholars Applications OPEN

The DeBerry Civic Scholars at Northwestern is a leadership development and community engagement program for a cohort of selected first-, second-, or third-year students. The program allows students to engage in meaningful public service rooted in the local community and the reflection space to process those experiences.

Grounding for Public Service (GPS) Club is a weekly learning and connecting space (with FREE DINNER) focused on social justice and equity education in Evanston and Chicago. We focus on growing our knowledge of Evanston and Chicago through a racial justice and equity lens. The goal is to build a community of informed and engaged citizens. All are welcome! Norris Has A New Reservation Software

Norris University Center is now live with our new reservation software, Mazevo! Mazevo (mah-zay-voe) is Greek for "gather"! Cloud-based and PC/Mac/tablet/mobile friendly, the platform dramatically simplifies the scheduling process for the event host and the staff coordinating logistics on the backend. Please be advised that Mazevo reservations are for Northwestern University-recognized student organizations, faculty, and staff only.

Attendees will participate in workshops, discussions, and networking sessions. ConnectEd isn’t just a conference; it’s a community of educators committed to shaping the future of education.


Drop-In Peer Tutoring

Come see the ASLA Peer Tutors for help with a variety of courses! They are available Sunday through Thursday at Schapiro Hall, Shepard Hall, Elder Lounge, the Multicultural Center, the Black House, and the GSRC.

Subjects covered include Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Economics, Engineering Analysis, Math, Physics and Statistics.


Academic Accommodations for Religious Holidays 

Under Northwestern’s policy on academic accommodations for religious holidays, students are not penalized for class absences to observe religious holidays. If your observance conflicts with a class meeting, exam, or assignment deadline, consult with your instructor by the end of the second week of the term (October 4). For any undergraduate courses with a common midterm (that is, scheduled outside of regular class time) or final exam, submit an accommodation request through the Office of the Provost’s form by the end of the second week of the term.
