Data Dashboard

Each January, the OGSS provides an annual report to Northwestern faculty and staff. It includes an overview of student travel and health, safety, and security incidents. Our data represents travel by the Global Learning Office (GLO) (undergraduate study abroad) plus university-affiliated travel by graduate students and non-GLO undergraduates, also called non-credit travelers. No personally identifiable information is presented in the report unless we receive permission. A snapshot of some of this data is provided below.

International travel is not without risk, but OGSS works in concert with a variety of individuals who provide support to travelers before, during, and after a trip. Read more about how we manage risk. Analyzing incidents may result in changes to student advising, insurance coverages, pre-departure orientations, or program operation.

Student Travelers

2024-25

count of student travelersNorthwestern sponsored student travel includes study abroad, graduate and undergraduate exchange programs, short-term class trips, research, conference attendance, internships, arts performances, volunteering / service learning, and athletic competitions. The rate of growth within the three cohorts of travelers has remained steady for the past few years. The Global Learning Office and the Kellogg School of Management contribute to the overall growth through increased programming and outreach efforts.

Top 10 countries for student travelers

Health & Safety Incidents Abroad

2024-25

student health & safety incidents abroadSince OGSS began recording incidents, most reports have been minor health-related issues like gastrointestinal illnesses, viral infections, and activity-related injuries. Data shows that intervention by trained trip leaders or on-site staff can reduce the severity of health outcomes. In 2024-25, an increase in civil unrest or public protests interfered with some travelers’ plans but rarely posted long-term safety concerns. Critical incidents involved evacuating student and employee travelers from an active conflict zone under the direction of Northwestern’s security assistance provider.
