Winter faculty webinar, March 8: ChatGPT and Generative Artificial Intelligence at Northwestern

Dear faculty,

For the past two months, hardly a meeting has taken place or a newsletter has arrived in my inbox without a mention of ChatGPT, generative artificial intelligence technologies or the tools that detect their presence. Reactions to these technologies have ranged from alarm to excitement.

To help Northwestern address the questions, concerns and opportunities associated with the emergence of these technologies, I have established the Generative AI Advisory Committee, a multi-disciplinary group of experts who provide counsel on our institutional approach to AI and promote coordination of best practices across our schools and units. I invite you to join us for the Office of the Provost’s winter faculty webinar, scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8.

Technologies such as ChatGPT offer new ways to engage students in critical thinking, writing and analysis while also serving as tools for instructors in the creation of course material. Facilitated by the committee’s chair, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education Miriam Gamoran Sherin, the webinar will address the nature of generative AI tools, Northwestern’s approach to these technologies from the perspectives of pedagogy and policy, and resources for faculty who want to learn more.

You can register online or watch a recording of the session, which will be posted on the Office of the Provost news site. If you have specific questions that you would like to have addressed by the panel, please submit them when you register.

I look forward to working together to determine the best path forward for our community of scholars.

Thank you,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost and Professor
