Summer Resident Assistant
The Summer Resident Assistant (RA) is a Northwestern student who has previously served as an RA or will be an RA during the upcoming academic year and is a member of the Residential Services summer team. The Summer RA will work primarily with Northwestern students living on campus for parts of the summer as well as with guests of summer camps and conferences. This is a live-in position and the Summer RA works approximately 20 hours per week. RAs must be comfortable interacting with university officials, faculty, parents, and guests. The Summer RA reports to professional staff member(s) in Residential Services and works collaboratively with Residential Services staff.
The employment period is from June 15 to August 27, 2022. RA staff must be fully available for the entire employment period. RAs must be in good employment standing (i.e. no significant job action) in order to apply. All dates are subject to change. Required training dates are June 15-17, 2022.

Position Description
General Responsibilities and Duties
- Serve in a 24-hour duty rotation to ensure safety, security, and policy enforcement within the residential space, including weekend duty. Submit reports to supervisor with details of incidents.
- Communicate regularly with supervisor, staff team, and central office staff. Complete administrative tasks, including but not limited to weekly staff and supervisor meetings, paperwork, and staff trainings.
- Staff the area desk, for at least 4 hours per week and pre-selected weekend shifts, providing a high level of customer service and a welcoming atmosphere to all.
- Serve as a resource for Northwestern students and guests in summer housing.
- Effectively problem solve when necessary to meet guest and department needs.
- With direction from Summer Resident Director(s), encourage attendance at programming happening throughout the campus and Evanston area as necessary. The summer RA will also provide opportunities for engagement and community participation for residents through creation of intentional programs and community meetings.
Physical Requirements
- This position requires overnight response to urgent situations and emergencies which includes interrupted sleep and ability to wake up from a phone call while sleeping, as well as the ability to lift up to 20 lbs., and be able to walk up and down stairs.
At-Will Employment
- RAs are considered an employee at will. Either the staff member or Northwestern University may end the employment relationship at will, with or without cause or advance notice, at any time during or after the orientation and review period. (NU Staff Handbook, page 2.12). If the employment relations ends, the stipend, room cost, and meal plan costs will no longer be covered and will be prorated to the date of resignation. RAs who are no longer employed will be reassigned to another location in campus housing or may be permitted to move off campus.

Minimum Qualifications
- Northwestern Student during the Spring 2022 quarter
- Do not need to be enrolled in any summer coursework
- Preferred enrollment in Fall 2022 courses, however:
- Graduates of the undergraduate Northwestern class of 2022 are welcome to apply if they are accepted into a graduate program. Written proof of acceptance into the program from the institution must be submitted with the RA application along with the date that the applicant is required to be on campus. If applicants have an assistantship or internship that requires an earlier start date than the ending date of the summer RA position, it must be disclosed in the RA application.
- Good academic and conduct standing
- Has, or will have, RA experience at Northwestern. Preference will be given to those who have been an RA previously, ideally in the 2021-2022 academic year.
- Minimum cumulative and Quarterly GPA of 2.5 or above
- Current RAs must be in good employment standing (i.e. no significant job action) in order to apply.
