Nominations for University Teaching Awards

Dear Deans,

I am writing to solicit nominations for the 2024 University Teaching Awards, our top awards for faculty who demonstrate excellence in undergraduate classroom teaching and represent innovative curricular leadership across the University.

This year, we will appoint up to three Charles Deering McCormick Professors of Teaching Excellence and two Charles Deering McCormick University Lecturers, Professors of Instruction, or Clinical Professors for three-year terms beginning September 1, 2024.

Nominees for the McCormick Professorships must be full-time tenured members of the faculty. Nominees for the Lectureship, Professorship of Instruction or Clinical Professorships must hold full-time positions. All nominees must be in at least their fifth year at Northwestern at the time of nomination. Re-nominations of your exceptional faculty will be considered. Please note that award funding is no longer deferred during a period of leave.

All nomination materials must be received by Friday, Feb. 23, 2024. For each candidate that you wish to nominate, please submit the materials to teachingawards@northwestern.edu.

Distinguished classroom teaching continues to be a central consideration in these awards. However, in the review of nominations, teaching will be broadly conceived—also to include such activities as innovative curriculum design, advising, mentoring and contributions to undergraduate life.

The funds connected with the awards will be transferred in September 2024 by central administration. The faculty member's base salary will continue to be paid by the school from appropriated funds or other established sources.

For complete details on these awards and a link to the list of required nomination materials, visit our website.

I look forward to receiving your nominations.

I also want to let you know that the call for applications and nominations for the Alumnae Award for Curriculum Innovation, Open Educational Resources Faculty Grant, Linzer Award for Excellence in Diversity and Equity, and Provost Award for Exemplary Service were sent to faculty on Oct. 4. The deadline for all four of those awards is Nov. 10.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost and Professor
