Extended and expanded research grant programs

Dear faculty,

Last year, Northwestern successfully established the COVID-19 Research Recovery Grants Program to help mitigate the disruption to faculty members’ research and expanded the Provost Grants for Research in Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts (HSSA) program. In total, these programs awarded nearly $2 million in funding to about 75 faculty members as part of our broad response to the personal and professional challenges created by the pandemic.

Today, I am delighted to share that Northwestern has renewed the COVID-19 Research Recovery Grants Program and further expanded the HSSA program for 2022-23 as we continue to assist faculty whose research or creative work has been markedly delayed, interrupted or otherwise disrupted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two levels of COVID-19 Research Recovery Grants—Purple Grants up to $35,000 and White Grants up to $10,000—are available for pre-tenure faculty and tenured associate professors with a demonstrated need for recovery funds. Eligible faculty members can submit one proposal for the most appropriate grant level based on their individual research recovery needs. Please review the website for more information about eligibility, grant amounts and examples of possible expenses.

HSSA grants of up to $5,000 are available to tenure-line and non-tenure-eligible faculty in the humanities, social sciences and arts fields. Priority will be given to non-tenure-eligible faculty, to faculty at any rank who have had significant caregiving responsibilities during the period of the pandemic, and to projects that assist faculty with recovery from COVID-19-related disruptions to their research and creative work.

Both of these grant applications will be reviewed by a faculty committee. The deadline to apply for the grants is Jan. 20, 2023. Please email faculty@northwestern.edu if you have questions.

Finally, I’d like to let you know that the Office of the Provost will host an on-site weekly writing group on Friday mornings beginning in January. Space is limited, so please sign up if you are interested.

I wish you the best through December and hope you have a restful break. Please look for information on additional writing support and career development programs and grants in the new year.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost and Professor
