Originally from Dallas, TX, Mikayla has spent the last 9 years living Massachusetts building her career in Mental Health Counseling before recently moving to Chicago. Mikayla feels a deep passion for therapy and working with the college population specifically. She has spent the last 5 years working in a college counseling setting with a focus on BIPOC mental health and social justice programming. Coming from an Afro-Indian Caribbean background, Mikayla appreciates learning about different cultures and finds culture incredibly influential in shaping the lives of her clients. Mikayla also has previous experience working community mental health and substance abuse specifically opioid dependence. Mikayla adopts an eclectic approach to working with her clients as she believes that individuals have individual needs in therapy. Working from a strengths-based lens and providing a nonjudgmental space for clients to practice vulnerability is extremely important to Mikayla. She uses humor often, works to build a connection with her clients, and enjoys helping others with boundary setting and self esteem-building. Mikayla believes the relationship with self is the most crucial to mental health and wellness. When Mikayla is not at CAPS she likes to watch a lot of different TV shows including reality TV and dramas. Mikayla likes to sing in her car, shower, or around the office and loves to listen to podcasts and engage in new experiences around the city with friends. Mikayla is a big foodie who doesn't like to cook so she loves restaurant recommendations.
