Dr. Loren Carmichael is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Sport Psychology at Northwestern Sport Psychology Services, where she has been providing mental health and mental performance services to Northwestern student-athletes since August 2025. In her current role, Dr. Carmichael focuses on enhancing athletes' mental well-being, helping them navigate the unique challenges of collegiate sports, and optimizing their mental performance both on and off the field.
Prior to joining Northwestern, Dr. Carmichael completed her predoctoral internship at Clemson University’s Counseling and Psychological Services. During her time at Clemson, she worked closely with both undergraduate and graduate students, offering individual therapy, group therapy, outreach programs, and crisis intervention services. She also worked with student-athletes at Clemson, addressing their mental health and performance needs, and fostering resilience in a highly demanding athletic environment.
Dr. Carmichael earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychological Sciences from Austin Peay State University in 2019. She then went on to complete both her Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Marywood University, graduating with her Psy.D. in 2025. Her doctoral dissertation focused on African American women's body image, specifically examining factors such as skin color satisfaction, hair type satisfaction, and eating habits.
Dr. Carmichael’s professional interests include working with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and body image concerns. She is deeply committed to fostering mental health awareness and providing tailored support to those navigating the intersection of athletic and personal challenges.
