The Graduate School Students
TGS works with the Student Health Insurance office and the Office of Risk Management to provide health insurance to TGS students. TGS lobbies on behalf of the graduate student population, and participates on a Student Health Insurance Policy Committee, but final decisions regarding University health insurance policy and requirements, and NU-SHIP plan design, are not made by TGS. TGS often subsidizes the cost of the premiums for the NU-SHIP. Please visit the TGS website, or contact TGS directly, for more information regarding your subsidy.
- Northwestern requires all students to maintain good health insurance coverage while registered at the University. (Continuous health insurance coverage also is a federal requirement for all U.S. citizens and permanent residents, per the Affordable Care Act.)
- During the time TGS students are registered at Northwestern, you will be enrolled each year in the Northwestern University Student Health Insurance Plan (NU-SHIP).
- You may waive NU-SHIP enrollment by affirming that you have alternate, active health insurance that meets NU's comparable coverage requirements.
Please note: per Northwestern University policy, international students (students holding an F-1 or J-1 U.S. Visa) may not waive the NU-SHIP.
Note also that students registered for TGS 512 are also enrolled in the NU-SHIP annually, and must waive NU-SHIP enrollment in CAESAR with comparable coverage during the open enrollment period.
