"you, me, same" by Alison Park, Class of 2023

Bong Joon Ho (left) and Spike Lee (right). In Spike Lee’s film “Do the Right Thing,” a line that particularly resonated with me is from the Korean grocer, who in an attempt to save his business pleads “I no white! I black! You, me, same!” It is this very film that Bong would later translate/write out the Korean subtitles for during his college years and it is this very director, Spike Lee, that would present Bong the Oscar for Best Director on his work for “Parasite.” Their full-circle exchange and their respective successes in a predominantly white film industry reminded me the importance of interracial solidarity.
