The Master of Science in Social and Economic Policy program is seeking a social media graduate assistant for the 2025–26 academic year with the possibility of extension. The role will provide marketing and communication support, with some occasional administrative or general program assistance.

Originally from Mumbai, India, Natraj completed a Ph.D. in organic and materials chemistry at Northwestern last year. Natraj will now pivot to biology to explore how she can leverage her materials background in the world of medicine.

Julian and his LAPT colleagues recently developed the world’s fastest real-time shift, scale, and rotation-invariant (SSRI) high-definition image correlator, a device that can quickly compare images and measure their similarities.

Paul's upcoming lecture, How to Do Things with Music? David Franco Mendes and the Jewish Oratoria will be held on Thursday, April 24 from 6:00–7:30 PM in the McClintock Choral and Rehearsal Room and is open to the entire Northwestern community.

30 individuals were selected out of over 2,300 applicants, who will each receive up to $90,000 toward their graduate education. Minjung is currently pursuing her PhD in the Department of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences under the mentorship of Professors Omar Farha and Dayne Swearer.

The O'Donnell Brain Institute (OBI) at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center invites you to apply for the inaugural OBI Graduate Student Award Symposium to be held Thursday, October 17 – Friday, October 18. Graduate Out in STEM (GoSTEM) strives to empower LGBTQIA+ people in STEM to succeed personally, academically, and professionally by cultivating environments and communities that nurture innovation, leadership, and advocacy. The Brady Scholars Program in Ethics and Civic Life is seeking four graduate students to serve as mentors for undergraduate participants for three years. Mentors will receive a total award of $14,000 spread over those three years.

The African Graduate Student Association (AGSA) is a community of African graduate students at Northwestern University. Their mission is to provide a space for African graduate students to connect, share experiences, and support each other academically and professionally.

As we enter this season of gratitude and giving thanks, I would like to express my admiration to you all for continuing to debate and discuss geo-political issues and societal concerns with civility and calm. This is a challenging time for many in our community and around the world, and I appreciate the grace and space you are granting one another as we work toward greater compassion and peace.

This pilot program is open to post-candidacy PhD students in all disciplines and teaches Design Thinking principles that students can apply to all areas of their lives—including their careers—to build a path forward that aligns with their skills, interests, values, and goals.

I recognize that for many in our community, these last weeks have been extremely difficult and stressful as we agonize over the escalation of violence and unrest in the Middle East. Since my statement on October 12 condemning acts of atrocity, I have heard from a variety of students and faculty, some with ties to Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, and the Palestinian diaspora. They share a common fear for their loved ones, and they desperately want to keep themselves and their families safe.

Many of you have reached out expressing outrage, disappointment, fear, and concern regarding the ongoing attacks and escalating tensions between Israel and Gaza. While geo-political matters are complex and there are no easy solutions, atrocities must be acknowledged and acts of terror must be condemned. We condemn the horrific attack on Israel by Hamas.

Welcome to the Fall Quarter and the start of a new academic year. The Center for Awareness, Response and Education (CARE) is seeking a student service aide for the 2023–24 academic year. The student service aid is a part-time employee who is supervised by the Assistant Director for Prevention and Masculine Engagement at CARE and will work closely with the Assistant Director of Outreach for CARE and the Director of CARE.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling struck down the race-conscious admissions programs at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, which will affect the student admission process at all private and public universities. This decision is fundamentally at odds with Northwestern’s stated mission of inclusion and racial equity. TGS remains committed to supporting and engaging with our diverse community of students and scholars.

The NUPrint service run by the University Libraries will be replaced in late June 2023 (after Commencement) with a new Managed Print Service (MPS). The new service will be branded Northwestern Print and will provide unified print services across both campuses for faculty, staff, and students.

The Alumnae of Northwestern University has selected three recipients to receive its 2023 Graduate Fellowships for graduate-level tuition. The fellowships are awarded to full-time students in terminal master’s degree programs who show promise of achieving distinction in careers that will serve the public good.

The Training Grant Support Office recently launched a new dedicated microsite for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, training grant directors, and administrators.

The Presidential Fellowship is the most prestigious fellowship awarded to graduate students by Northwestern University. It is awarded annually to graduate students who are nominated by their academic programs.

Work within Dr. Moya Bailey's Labs for Liberation. Labs for Liberation is a Mellon-grant-funded collaboration between two humanities labs: Digital Apothecary (Northwestern University, directed by Dr. Moya Bailey) and Critical Design Lab (Vanderbilt University, directed by Dr. Aimi Hamraie).

The Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI) seeks graduate students to lead two workshops with undergraduate students.

Graduate Admission Counselors work to build and maintain relationships with prospective students and their families. Additionally, Graduate Counselors supervise and train current undergraduate students in the Senior Counselor role.

Alumnae grants provide funding for a wide range of projects, including research support for faculty and graduate students, technological improvements, classroom equipment, curricular programs, podcast/film projects, symposia/meetings, and support for theatre and the arts on campus.

Northwestern will nominate up to seven doctoral students/alumni for the Schmidt Science Fellows Program. Fellows will spend one-to-two months conducting STEM research with an annual $100,000 stipend and coverage of conference expenses. Eligible doctoral students and alumni should apply by Monday, May 1.

The Graduate School Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) is thrilled to announce the launch of the Social Changemakers Video Series, celebrating the innovative projects of ODI Social Justice Mini-Grant Awardees. This series is an opportunity to learn about the meaningful work being done by our students, and we invite those who share our commitment to social justice and inclusivity to apply for the 2023 ODI Social Justice Mini-Grant.

The Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI) seeks one graduate student teaching assistant for Summer 2023. Applications for the 2023 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) are now open. The DDRA provides opportunities for doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies.

Franke Graduate Fellows pursue independent research within a vibrant interdisciplinary collective, which includes multi-layered structured conversations among faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, internationally renowned visiting scholars, and distinguished visiting artists.

Doctoral students enrolled in science, engineering, math, and quantitative social science programs are invited to a virtual information session for the Management for Scientists and Engineers (MSE) Certificate Program on Thursday, February 16 from 4:00–5:00 PM CST on Zoom. Applications will open on Monday, February 27 and will close at 5:00 PM CST on Friday, March 31.

Practical training in verbal communication and presentation strategies is needed for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from any field to build confidence and create engaging and meaningful connections with a variety of audiences. The Graduate School's 2021 PhD and MFA Hooding Ceremony is tentatively scheduled to take place during the weekend of June 12-13, 2021 to coincide with Commencement. It is our hope that we will be able to host an in-person ceremony pending public health guidance. More details will be shared as they become available.

Stop by the Purple Pantry to shop for free groceries. The Purple Pantry collects donations from the Northwestern community and provides groceries to students who experience hunger due to financial constraints. Students should bring their own shopping bags for groceries.

The Office of Fellowships will be holding an informational session about applying to the GRFP on Monday, September 30.

Alice Millar Chapel, located at the south end of the Evanston campus, is known for its spectacular stained glass and a nationally recognized music program. The Alice Millar Chapel Choir is at the heart of that program and is open to membership for all students, staff, and faculty. The chapel choir provides music for University Chapel Services each Sunday during the academic year and four concerted events.   

The Data Incubator is an intensive 8-week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in earlier sessions, the Data Incubator will be holding another fellowship.

If you were not able to pick up your U-Pass transit card during our New Student Orientation, they will likely be available to pick up at The Graduate School.

On Monday, August 5, 2019, The Graduate School (TGS) and Kellogg School of Management hosted a celebration to honor the most recent PhD candidates to complete the Management for Scientists and Engineers (MSE) certificate program.

Yongsun Kim, a PhD candidate in Technology and Social Behavior, and Professor Haoqi Zhang are searching for participants who are interested in participating in a study that will assist in designing apps that use people's existing routines to conveniently help each other deliver items around Northwestern. 

The University Libraries’ annual Research Resources Forum will be held on Monday, September 23 from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM in the University Library (1970 Campus Drive, Evanston, IL 60208). This invitation-only forum is an introduction to library and information services for incoming graduate students in the Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, School of Communication, and School of Music.

Join the Graduate Student Association (GSA) on Wednesday, August 14 from 7:00 - 10:00 PM for Movie Night at Gallagher Way. This is a FREE outdoor bi-weekly movie showing right near Wrigley Field. They will be showing 10 Things I Hate About You. GSA will meet at Gallagher Way for the evening and will provide some picnic snacks and blankets (but feel free to also bring your own).

Join the Women in Science and Engineering Research (WISER) on Friday, June 7 for an Implicit Bias in STEM Symposium, featuring Professor Corinne Moss-Racusin as the keynote speaker. Professor Moss-Racusin is a psychologist from Skidmore College, whose research areas broadly include stereotyping processes, gender roles, and diversity science, especially as these topics apply to the STEM disciplines. This has included studies published in in Science and PNAS.

Hammer (1939-2019) was a groundbreaking lesbian feminist experimental filmmaker whose work challenged the norms of gender and sexuality on screen. The Northwestern Public Health Review's spring symposium, entitled "Access to Health in Lagos: An Interdisciplinary Partnership with the Community", is on Wednesday, April 24 at 4:00 PM in Hughes Auditorium. Applications are now open for qualifying Northwestern graduate students who could benefit from Wilderness First Aid training in support of their academic goals requiring remote or rural international travel to apply for a reimbursement grant. This award is also available for and applicable to graduate students who are traveling to urban areas of developing countries where access to quality, emergency medical services is limited.

The Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching is offering a variety of workshops designed to help graduate and postdoctoral students improve upon their teaching skills. 

Come to share and reflect on what it is that you believe...and why. Northwestern Believes is based on the popular National Public Radio program, "This I Believe," where participants create and share short essays which reflect what is most important in their lives. This three session series of mini-workshops guides Northwestern students as they find common values through story sharing and reflection. By the end of our time in small groups of 4-6, participants will have crafted a short personal essay, or statement, about a moment they noticed how their values shape their lives and influence their Northwestern experience! 

Data Science Nights are monthly hack nights on popular data science topics, organized by Northwestern University graduate students and scholars. Each night will feature refreshments, a talk on data science techniques or applications, and a hacking night with data science projects or learning groups of your choice. Aspiring, beginning, and advanced data scientists are welcome! 

TGS is seeking four current TGS students to be student marshals at our upcoming PhD and MFA Hooding Ceremony on Thursday, June 20 at Cahn Auditorium. Student marshals will be compensated $100 each.

The 2019 TGS hooding ceremony for PhD and MFA graduates will take place on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 3:00 PM in Cahn Auditorium. This ceremony includes PhD and MFA graduates from WCAS, Kellogg, SoC, Feinberg, and TGS interdisciplinary programs. (TGS students in SESP, McCormick, and Bienen are invited to participate in their respective school convocations.)

Spring is in the air! It is the start to longer days and warmer weather. It is also a time to celebrate our graduate community and recognize some of its many accomplishments. Spring is my favorite academic season, culminating in our hooding ceremony, an annual rite of passage to honor our PhD and MFA graduates and welcome them to our community of scholars.

Come help start the seeds for the vegetable garden this year and get a sneak peak of what you'll get to harvest this summer! Plant-It Purple will provide the necessary materials and snacks.

Students benefit from the mentorship of upperclassmen who serve as Peer Counselors; instruction of Faculty affiliated with Northwestern’s esteemed Writing Program; and support and guidance from staff in the Department of Campus Inclusion & Community. Open to all students, priority in SAW is given to first-generation and/or low-income students. Founded in 1966, SAW is the oldest program of its kind at Northwestern, benefiting more than 1500 students.

The Queer Pride Graduate Student Association (QPGSA) is proud to announce free registration for the 12th annual Queertopia conference on Saturday, March 2 on the Evanston campus. Themed LGBTQ+ Media Cultures, this year's conference features keynote speaker Fran Tirado, Deputy Editor of OUT Magazine and co-host of Food 4 Thot, and a screening of Happy Birthday, Marsha!, a short film about iconic transgender artist and activist Marsha "Pay it No Mind" Johnson. 

The Department of Psychology has updated their diversity statement as a forceful reiteration of their departmental values, intended to make it clear that they value diversity, mutual respect, and full inclusion of members of historically marginalized and oppressed groups -- and that they reject pseudoscience supporting or justifying the oppression of marginalized and disadvantaged groups. Going forward, their vetting process for potential visiting scholars will make all reasonable efforts to exclude any individuals whose research contradicts these values.

The Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) is a Northwestern University-wide institute dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals and communities through multidisciplinary research, community engagement, and training. Sexual and gender minorities include lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people – anyone whose sexual or gender identity does not conform to social majority categories of sexual orientation or gender.

The Research Safety Student Initiative (RSSI) is hosting its annual Safety Awareness Week to promote awareness of research safety. Please note when you apply for and take out student loan funds (e.g., Stafford loans) for your educational needs, this is not considered taxable income. The government expects you to pay back your student loans, with interest, at the appropriate time, therefore they do not take taxes out on the loans. However, when you begin repaying your loans, you may qualify for a student loan interest deduction when you file taxes, depending on your income at the time and how the loan funds were used.

The Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society commemorates the first African American to earn a doctorate degree from an American university (Physics, Yale University, 1876). The Bouchet Society seeks to develop a network of scholars who exemplify academic and personal excellence, foster environments of support, and serve as examples of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and advocacy for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the academy—exemplifying the spirit and example of Dr. Bouchet.

In the aftermath of 1963's 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, Nina Simone rocked the nation with "Four Women," her tribute in song to the four little girls lost in the tragedy. Powerful anthems such as "Mississippi Goddam," "Old Jim Crow," and "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" followed, fueling the Civil Rights movement and transforming her public persona from songstress to activist. Celebrate Ms. Simone's lasting legacy in this provocative and personal musical journey. 

The third annual Inclusive Teaching Forum (ITF) will be held on Wednesday, February 13, at Norris University Center on Evanston Campus from 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM. The forum is designed to help educators at Northwestern (faculty, PhD students, postdoctoral trainees, staff, and administrators) to collectively advance equitable and inclusive learning and teaching environments across the university. The ITF is a day-long experience which includes workshops, a lunchtime plenary on intersectionality, and small group discussions aimed at fostering inclusive learning environments.

Norris University Center will be having a grand opening for their renovated foodhall on Friday, January 25 from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM.  There will be music, games, vendors, food sampling, giveaways, and prizes (including two Apple watches) to celebrate the transformation of their ground floor. The Norris University Center staff hopes you are able to stop by and celebrate with them. 

The Office of Global Safety and Security (OGSS) has made it even easier for graduate students traveling independently to disclose their university-sponsored international travel by creating a SHORT Qualtrics form accessible from the OGSS website. The Graduate Engagement Opportunities (GEO) Community Practicum enables PhD students to connect theory & practice through a quarter-long internship with a community organization and a credit-bearing graduate seminar on public scholarship.

The Multicultural Dialogue Group (MDG) is an initiative by the Graduate International Students Association (G-ISA) to connect students, postdoctoral trainees, visiting scholars, and others from various backgrounds with one another, and to create opportunities for meaningful conversations on different topics including self identity, relationships, prejudices, music, arts and more.

From there, the group will walk to the Chicago 49th Ward Aldermanic Debate at Sullivan High School (6631 N. Bosworth Ave.). 

Caravans of Gold is the first major exhibition addressing the scope of Saharan trade and the shared history of West Africa, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe from the eighth to sixteenth centuries. Weaving stories about interconnected histories, the exhibition showcases the objects and ideas that connected at the crossroads of the medieval Sahara and celebrates West Africa’s historic and under-recognized global significance.

The Pritzker School of Law is hosting a student oratorical contest as part of its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration celebration on Monday, January 28, 2019. This contest is open to all students who are currently enrolled in a program on the Chicago campus of Northwestern University. All contestants must be available to participate in the Oral Advocacy Competition on Friday, January 25, 2019 and the Chicago campus’s MLK commemoration keynote event on Monday, January 28, 2019. Both events will take place at the Pritzker School of Law from 12:00-1:00 PM.

All active students in The Graduate School (TGS) who are continuing their studies in winter quarter must register per The Graduate School’s continuous registration policy. Current students may register for winter quarter until 11:59 PM on Friday, January 11, 2019.
