Apply to Be a Graduate Admission Counselor in the Office of Undergraduate Admission

The Office of Undergraduate Admission is seeking to hire 4-6 graduate students to join their team as Graduate Admission Counselors for the upcoming academic year.

A Graduate Admission Counselor is a professional member of the Undergraduate Admission Office who works to build and maintain relationships with prospective students and their families. Additionally, Graduate Counselors supervise and train current undergraduate students in the Senior Counselor role. As such, applicants should have strong leadership and communication skills. Successful applicants have demonstrated an interest in higher education, learning about the admissions process, and have pride and passion for representing the Northwestern community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Developing a comprehensive knowledge of admissions procedures and policies with the purpose of assisting prospective students through the application process via phone, e-mail, and in-person meetings with walk-in visitors.
  • Learning and mastering the general undergraduate admission information session, and presenting this session to prospective students, parents, and other visitors.
  • Managing the admission office and student staff on select Saturdays throughout the year (typically in fall and spring), including opening/closing the building and the execution of all admissions programming.
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned by the internship supervisor, including assisting with day-to-day office duties and special programming (i.e. admitted student days).
  • Aid in the supervision and ongoing training of junior and senior counselors.
Graduate Admission Counselors report to the internship supervisor but may also receive assignments, guidance, feedback, and support from additional full-time admissions staff. Graduate Admission Counselors also have the ability to read applications during the winter quarter to fully understand the admissions process – a great opportunity for those interested in gaining reading experience.

A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week during normal business hours - flexibly scheduled around classes and prior commitments - is expected. Saturday shifts are a requirement for graduate admission counselors. Preference will be given to applicants who can commit to a full-year cycle in the position. All Graduate Admission Counselors must adhere to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines, as well as provide a signed agreement regarding other office confidentiality systems.

The position offers a competitive hourly wage and does not require eligibility for Federal work-study funding. Applicants must be graduate-level students at Northwestern University. Starting rate is $18.50/hour.
