Northwestern University was international from its early years. Henry Martyn Kidder, a member of the first class of graduates in 1859, was born in Rio de Janeiro when his U.S. parents were missionaries in Brazil. He later became an alderman for the City of Evanston. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living graduate and the last survivor of his class.
