IMPORTANT: (7/18/2025)
If you are a student with NU-SHIP and you received a bill for services rendered at the Student Health Center at Searle (not other NM locations), you may not owe that balance. Please contact NM's Billing Department at 855-694-2866 to let them know of the issue. There was an error in the system that we are working to fix.
If you have insurance that is not NU-SHIP and you received a bill, please contact the NM Billing Department to discuss your bill as well. Staff at the Student Health Service cannot answer billing questions.
Norovirus Information
Norovirus cases have been surging in our area lately. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of illness and taking steps to protect yourself can help contain the spread.
What is Norovirus?
- Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis
- Common symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Less common symptoms include fever, headache, and/or body aches.
- Symptoms generally resolve within 1-3 days. People can continue to spread the virus after their symptoms have resolved.
- Norovirus is spread by having direct contact with someone infected with the virus (not airborne), eating food contaminated with the virus, or touching contaminated surfaces.
What can you do to protect yourself?
- The best thing you can do to protect yourself from viruses like Norovirus is to properly wash your hands regularly. Hand sanitizer can be used as an adjunct AFTER washing hands with soap and water, but it does not work to kill Norovirus on its own.
- Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday to yourself), especially before eating, preparing, or handling food; after using the toilet or changing diapers; and before giving yourself or someone else medicines.
If you are experiencing symptoms of Norovirus, please make an appointment to be evaluated by a clinician at Student Health ASAP, either through MyNM or by calling 847-491-8100.
