North Campus Drive Reconfiguration

Construction of the North Campus Parking/Recreation/Academic Facility will require a reconfiguration of North Campus Drive. This reconfiguration will occur in three phases the first of which will go into effect on May 29, 2013, at 6:00 a.m. At that time a portion of North Campus Drive will be closed and traffic will be rerouted via a temporary road through the construction site as shown on the attached drawing.  Portions of this temporary road will be constructed of compacted gravel.

This phase of the road configuration will accommodate a pedestrian path along the east side of its route although portions of the path will be constructed of compacted gravel. Phase 2 of the reconfiguration will require elimination of the pedestrian path adjacent to Campus Drive. Pedestrians will need to utilize the paths, indicated in green on the attached drawing, to access SPAC and other campus buildings south of the construction site. The pedestrian path at the north has been shown to indicate the shortest route for those coming from Lincoln Street and areas north. The sidewalks along Lincoln Street and the east side of Campus Drive adjacent to the Reservoir Lot will remain open primarily to allow access to the beach once it opens for the summer.

It is expected that Phase 1 of the temporary stone road will need to be in place for approximately 3 to 4 weeks at which point the temporary road (North Campus Drive) will shift to a location further west through the construction site.  Additional information will be provided prior to implementation of Phase 2 of the reconfiguration.

UPDATE: JULY 15, 2013

Much of the foundation work was completed last month and installation of the concrete columns along the west side of the new building is underway. The majority of the site utility work is now complete thus allowing for North Campus Drive to be rerouted to its permanent location. The relocation will be effective Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 6:00 a.m.

The concrete curbs and binder course of asphalt have been placed for the segment of North Campus Drive that runs truly north/south. The northern-most segment and the east/west segment of the new North Campus Drive will remain as gravel for a while longer to accommodate the construction of the building and the completion of the site utilities.

Please note that there will not be a pedestrian path along the new route of North Campus Drive for the remainder of the construction of the new building. Pedestrians will need to utilize the pedestrian paths along the north, west and south perimeters of the construction site. There will be some days over the next couple of months when the remaining utility work will require the closure of one lane of traffic along sections of the gravel portions of the road and/or the portion of Tech Drive/Campus Drive adjacent to the turnaround in front of Frances Searle. When necessary, there will be flaggers on site to direct traffic so that it flows as efficiently as possible.
