Northwestern Dining Supports Sustainable Food

Sustainable DiningNorthwestern Dining’s approach to sustainability focuses on educating students and providing them with opportunities to practice sustainable dining habits. During Earth Month, Northwestern Dining will be hosting a variety of events to inform and involve the University community. Visit a dining hall to learn about these sustainable food initiatives.

Sustainable Seafood Week, April 11 – 15
Allison dining hall will be transformed into a seafood restaurant to educate students on the sustainability of their seafood options on campus. Sustainable seafood is seafood that is either caught or farmed in ways that consider the long-term vitality of harvested species and the well-being of the oceans, as well as the livelihoods of fishery-dependent communities.

Real Food Day, April 18
Northwestern Dining will partner with Real Food at Northwestern to serve a lunch made of entirely real rood at the Sargent dining hall. Real food is defined as food that is local, community-based, ecologically sound, humane, and/or built on fair-labor practices.

Weigh the Waste, April 18 and 19
On April 18 and 19, sustainability interns will be tracking and measuring students’ post-consumer food waste in the Allison dining hall. Northwestern Dining will also offer a new food sampling program in an effort to encourage guests to “take less, and waste less.”

iCommit Photo Booth, April 20 and 21
Pledge your commitment to sustainable practices at the iCommit photo booth. Visit the photo booth at Foster Walker on April 20 or at Norris on April 21 to write down one way that you will practice more sustainable habits in your daily life and snap a photo. The photos will appear on Northwestern Dining’s social media pages to encourage others to make commitments to sustainability.

Earth Day Menus, April 22
Enjoy lunch menus that showcase more sustainable recipes with a focus on plant-based diets at dining halls across campus.

Fresh Market, April 22
Purchase fresh produce at an on-campus market, featuring items from local farmers and small businesses.

Visit the Northwestern Dining web page for more information about these and other events or to learn more about sustainable food initiatives on campus.
