Green Cup trophies

Green Cup is Underway

From October 17 through November 13, students on the Evanston campus are competing in Green Cup. This event challenges students to reduce energy and water use in their residences and to participate in sustainability-related events.

Last year’s winners were Foster-Walker for residence with food service and GREEN House and the Residential College of Community and Cultural Studies for residence without food service. Sigma Phi Epsilon took home the fraternity trophy, while Kappa Delta won the sorority category.

This year, the trophies are up for grabs again, along with prize money that can be put toward Dance Marathon fundraising or sustainability related projects and events. Here are some tips for conserving energy and water and getting involved in campus sustainability efforts during Green Cup and throughout the year.

  • Take short showers.
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Only wash full loads of laundry, and wash in cold water.
  • Hang laundry up to dry.
  • Share a fridge rather than using an individual mini fridge.
  • Turn off lights and electronics when not in use.
  • Use a power strip to turn off electronics and reduce standby or “vampire” power loads.
