Extreme Cold Watch
January 21, 2026
An extreme cold watch has been issued for Chicago, Evanston and surrounding areas effective the evening of Thursday, January 22.
At this time, University operations and scheduled events will continue as planned. Northwestern will provide updates as needed.
Cold Weather Safety
People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to hypothermia. Frostbite on exposed skin is possible within 15 to 30 minutes.
If you must go out, some cold weather safety tips include:
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
- Wear a hat. Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
- Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
Frostbite Shuttles
On Friday, Jan. 23, the University will utilize Frostbite shuttles, which provide daytime service on the Evanston Loop and Campus Loop shuttle routes during periods of extreme cold.
- Counterclockwise Frostbite: Shuttles will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Clockwise Frostbite: Shuttles will operate from 7:45 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.
