Defend free expression and promote engagement across differences

Protecting Free Speech

In an increasingly polarized society, open dialogue is more important than ever.

Northwestern is addressing the growing barriers to discourse that hinder our progress as a society and is encouraging productive discussion across different corners of the university.

COMMITTEE ON FREE EXPRESSION AND INSTITUTIONAL SPEECH

The President’s Advisory Committee on Free Expression and Institutional Speech is examining the boundaries, if any, for free expression and academic freedom in teaching, research and public discourse. With differing perspectives and viewpoints, this is the type of intellectual debate that lies at the very core of academic freedom.

SUSTAINED DIALOGUE

Meeting individuals from across different dimensions of identity is one of the greatest opportunities offered by higher education institutions. Housed within Student Affairs, Sustained Dialogue gathers graduate and undergraduate student participants from diverse backgrounds into small groups. These groups meet regularly to build relationships and develop informed strategies to improve their campuses and communities.
