Seeking Legal Resources
The following is a list of resources students can use to seek legal help and learn more about immigration laws and policies.
- Student Enrichment Services (SES) provides appointments with a consulting attorney specializing in immigration statuses. Currently enrolled, full-time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to receive legal consultation. This service is funded by Student Enrichment Services. There is no cost to receive a legal consultation when you set your appointment through Northwestern. Undergraduates, please email Jesus Galvan in SES to schedule an appointment. Graduate students, please email Rina Fernandes in TGS to schedule an appointment. All Legal Services appointments are held by phone or via Zoom.
- American Immigration Lawyer Association’s Find an Immigration Lawyer portal provides a database of immigration attorneys who can provide legal guidance and resources to students needing visa or immigration help.
- JusticiaLab’s Immigration Law Help is a database of immigration attorneys who can provide immigrants with legal assistance.
- Informed Immigrant is a digital hub and offline network offering up-to-date and accessible information and guidance for the undocumented immigrant community.
- Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education provides resources and guidance for navigating higher education and career opportunities for undocumented, international, and refugee students.
- Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors provides free high-quality legal services to low-income immigrants, engages in education and advocacy efforts and builds cross-cultural relationships. In addition to legal services provided by skilled attorneys at clinics across Northern Illinois, staff and volunteers provide hospitality and needed childcare, assist with requisite paperwork and offer a free legal consultation for every immigrant who comes to the clinic. Rooted in the United Methodist Church and moved by our faith to welcome immigrants, we are a non-profit organization that welcomes people of all background and faiths.
