Political Science Professor Ian Hurd during a Q&A with Representative of Taiwan to the United States Bi-khim Hsiao.

During her first visit to Northwestern, Bi-khim Hsiao, the Representative of Taiwan to the United States, took the opportunity to highlight Taiwan’s current state of trade, innovation, and education.

Representative Hsiao spoke to roughly 70 students, staff, faculty, and visitors at the Segal Visitors Center Auditorium on September 28th.

Her visit came on the heels of a recently penned partnership between Northwestern and National Taiwan University in May 2021, which marked the first official partnership in the Midwest under the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative launched in December 2020.

In a Q&A following her talk with Ian Hurd, professor of political science and director of the Weinberg College Center for International and Area Studies (WCCIAS), Hsiao reflected on her experience as a representative in Washington, from the most pressing issues upon her arrival and surprises of the role to more day-to-day activities on capitol hill.

The talk and Q&A are featured on the WCCIAS’s podcast “The Global Lunchbox.”
