About Our Learning Lab
Who We Are
We are the Community Enrichment Education Team at Northwestern University—a group of educators, facilitators, and community builders dedicated to creating transformative learning experiences for students, faculty, staff, and local community members. We believe that community enrichment is about learning together, sharing resources equitably, and fostering connections that strengthen both individuals and the broader community.
Our work centers on collaborative thinking, interdisciplinary inquiry, and practical application, allowing participants to explore complex issues, develop new skills, and build meaningful relationships. We see ourselves as a learning lab, where knowledge is co-created and applied to address pressing societal challenges.
Our Vision
We envision a Northwestern community where people learn with and from one another, where resources are accessible to all, and where alliances across disciplines and roles lead to collective growth and communal well-being.
Our Mission
Our mission is to design and facilitate educational experiences that strengthen community ties, promote thoughtful inquiry, and redistribute knowledge and resources. We work in partnership with university departments, research centers, libraries, and local organizations to extend learning beyond the classroom, ensuring that the knowledge generated at Northwestern benefits everyone on campus and in the broader community.
Meet the Team
Maj Kargbo
Director of Education
Favorite Movie: I watch and love too many films for there to ever be a favorite. But the film I’m currently still thinking about since I’ve watched (and rewatched) it: Alice Diop’s Saint Omer (2022)
Why this Labor is Meaningful: I believe learning can help us understand ourselves, one another, and the worlds we might build together. I love creating spaces where people can ask better questions, encounter new ideas, and leave seeing something differently than they did before.
Fun Fact: For a while, I was convinced I was going to become a French historian—I even took private French lessons while studying abroad. Eventually, I realized I may have just had an extraordinary college history professor and become completely fascinated by Toussaint L’Ouverture, the Haitian Revolution, and the possibilities of decolonization. I ultimately found my way to literature and film instead.

Favorite Movie: The Bicentennial Man
Why this Labor is Meaningful: I think about what adrienne maree brown says about fractals. Our small interactions fractalize, grow, and get adapted at the larger scale. What we design and how we create educational offerings is grounded in that belief. I hope that the work we do grows and changes inside and outside of the Northwestern campus.
Fun Fact: I co-founded an Indie Magazine here in Chicago called Disco Kitchen Mag.

Favorite Movie: La Vie Sur Terre (1998), The Gleaners and I (2000), I Saw the TV Glow (2024). My favorite movies are personal, intimate, and strange.
Why this Labor is Meaningful: For me, workplace culture is everything. I love crafting workshops and other learning opportunities that give all of us the chance to better understand how we work as humans, how we can work well together, and what might make our work feel more purposeful.
Fun Fact: The only celebrity I’ve ever met was Margaret Thatcher.
