Understanding Conflict Styles
Conflict is a normal part of everyday life, but we experience and approach conflict differently based on our life experiences, personalities, and context. Understanding our conflict styles can help us move through conflict productively within our families, communities, and workplaces. No one style is good or bad, but there are times in which each style can benefit or hinder conflict management.
To reflect on our own conflict styles, we will use the Thomas-Kilmann Instrument (TKI). The TKI is designed to assess how we behave in conflict situations—those times when we feel at odds with another person. From there, we will be introduced to the five different modes for responding to conflict and better understand which of those modes we tend to gravitate towards. We’ll then explore how to assess conflict situations to make more effective use of different conflict styles depending on the context.
- Learning Outcomes: At the end of this session, participants will have greater awareness about (1) the different types of conflict styles, (2) their own conflict styles, and (3) how our tendency towards certain styles can shape our interactions with others in the workplace.
- Format: This session can be delivered in person or virtually.
- Cost: Each participant will be asked to complete the TKI Assessment (15 minutes) ahead of the workshop. The cost is $50/assessment. For teams, OCE will cost-share with the sponsoring unit. For open-enrollment sessions, OCE will cover the cost
