Get to know your Eco-Rep

Eco-RepsThere are over 70 Eco-Reps to represent on-campus, Greek, and off-campus life this year. We wanted to take the time to recognize a few who have already shown a lot of initiative this year.

Name: Julie Boom
Year: Junior
Major: Biology major with an Environmental Policy and Culture minor
Affiliation: I was a Greek Eco-Rep last year and this year I am an Off-Campus Eco-Rep.
How many years have you been an Eco-Rep: 2 years
What are your goals as an Eco-Rep this year: I hope to establish an off-campus composting system for off-campus students in order to reduce waste and create a community centered around environmental initiatives.
What projects are you currently working on: Less than one month ago my house on south campus acquired a compost bin provided by the city of Evanston. Within one week I had some of my neighbors and friends asking to come over and check it out! I am working with a fellow Off-Campus Eco-Rep who lives on north campus to determine the steps to make it easier for off-campus students to compost. I hope to use my relations with Wild Roots, the student garden, in order to create some sort of give and take system where students have the opportunity to donate their compost or Wild Roots will provide the students with extra seeds in order to support off-campus student gardens.

Major: Environmental Science
Affiliation: On-Campus, Allison
How many years have you been an Eco-Rep: One year
What are your goals as an Eco-Rep this year: I want to help people become enthusiastic when thinking about how to lower their impact on the environment. I want to start plastic bag recycling, e-waste recycling, and battery recycling in my residence hall. Through Green Cup I want to help students establish habits that will last throughout the year.
What projects are you currently working on: Last week I set up a location for Allison residents to recycle plastic bags, I put up flyers to raise awareness about Green Cup, and wrote with dry-erase markers on mirrors to remind people about Green Cup.
