Functional Classifications

A class (3-digit number) indicates the type of activity that is supported by a chartstring in NU Financials. The class is assigned at the chartstring’s inception by Sponsored Research (for sponsored chartstrings) or the Office of Financial Operations (for non-sponsored chartstrings). Accurate functional coding is critical for the development of the university’s F&A rate, for financial statement reporting, and for various analytical purposes. There are currently thirty-eight unique classes.
