Adjust to Northwestern

Transitioning to life in a new country and academic environment takes time. Every student's adjustment experience is unique, and it's normal to experience various emotions during this process. Northwestern provides numerous resources and support services to help you navigate this transition, including mentorship programs and exchange student meet-ups. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is available to all students and can be a valuable resource as you adjust to campus life. Whether you're dealing with culture shock, academic stress, or just want someone to talk to, remember that GLO staff are here to support you throughout your journey.

Adjust to the USA

Living in the Chicago area offers a unique blend of Midwestern culture and urban life. You'll find yourself in one of America's most lively cities, with access to world-class museums, diverse neighborhoods, and public transportation. Evanston itself offers a charming downtown area and sits along the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. When the weather allows it, the lakefront becomes a hub for running, biking, swimming, and picnicking, with miles of paths and beaches to explore.

However, it can be stressful adjusting to life in the US, including understanding a new healthcare system, navigating a new city, and understanding new customs. The Office of International Student Services (OISS) offers resources on their website to help you navigate various aspects of American life. You will also receive information on adjusting to new systems in your pre-departure orientation course and during your on-campus orientation.
