Prepare to Travel

There are many things to think about when preparing to travel to the United States, whether it's your first time visiting or you're familiar with international travel. Careful preparation is essential to ensuring a smooth and successful journey. Check out the key steps for planning your travel below.

Plan Your Trip

J-1 students may not arrive to the U.S. more than 30 days before the start date on your DS-2019. If you decide to come earlier than this, you will need to enter as a tourist and later leave the United States so that you may enter in the correct J-1 status no more than 30 days before the start date listed on your document. Also, if you are living on campus, make sure to coordinate your travel planning with the move-in and move-out dates of the residence halls. Refer to the after arrival section for additional guidelines regarding your entry to the U.S., transportation to campus, and other arrival information.
Keep Your Passport With You

Keep Your Passport With You

Your passport is your primary international identification document. When traveling, always carry it with you. Keep a photocopy of your passport in a separate location and consider storing a digital backup as well, in case of loss or theft.

Carry Your Visa and DS-2019

Carry Your Visa and DS-2019

Your visa and DS-2019 form are essential documents when entering the United States. Always carry these original documents with you when traveling. Keep them in a safe, easily accessible place during your journey, and make copies of both documents to store separately as a backup in case of loss or unexpected situations.
