SESP senior headed to Springfield for government fellowship

The Office of Fellowships is jazzed to announce that Michael Deneroff (SESP ’19) has been chosen for the 2019–2020 cohort of James H. Dunn, Jr. Memorial Fellows!  As a fellow, Michael will work for the Illinois state government in the Office of Constituent Affairs.

Michael is a graduating senior from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, double majoring in social policy and legal Photograph of Michael Deneroffstudies, with a certificate in civic engagement.  He currently serves as a fellow at the Center for Civic Engagement, where he coordinates efforts to ensure an accurate census count in Illinois.  Michael is a former vice president for community relations for Northwestern’s Associated Student Government, through which he was a strong proponent of affordable housing reforms in Evanston’s City Hall.  Previously, Michael served on the executive board of Alternative Student Breaks and led or participated in five service-learning trips before working as a pre-orientation lead team member with Northwestern’s Office of New Student and Family Programs.

After devoting a large part of his undergraduate career to helping Northwestern students get more involved with the Chicagoland community, Michael is thrilled to have the opportunity to help make the Illinois government more responsive to the needs of various communities across the state.

The Dunn Fellowship Program provides bright, highly motivated college graduates a unique opportunity to Illinois state sealexperience firsthand the operations of state government for one year. Dunn Fellows are recruited from public and private colleges and universities throughout the nation.

Michael is the second consecutive Dunn Fellow for Northwestern.  Last year, Mackenzie Eisen (WCAS ’18) worked on the education-policy team through the fellowship.
