Established in 1988, MMUF) aims to increase multivocality in the faculty of higher education institutions by identifying students of great promise and helping them become scholars of the highest distinction. Its name honors Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, the noted African American educator, statesman, minister, and former president of Morehouse College.
Through a pipeline process that emphasizes mentoring, research support, programming, and student cohort building, Mellon partners with member colleges and universities to identify and support students of great promise and to help them become scholars and professionals of the highest distinction.
MMUF is proud of its legacy of field-transforming scholars whose perspectives greatly enrich the experiences of their students.
MMUF was established in 1988 by Mellon’s then president William G. Bowen and Henry Drewry. In 2003, the name of the program was changed to the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program in honor of the stellar educational achievements of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays.
Since its inception in 2008, MMUF at Northwestern has provided networking, mentoring, and development opportunities to more than 75 fellows.
