NIKKI The Traveling Library

Overview

We're excited to announce a new resource to our campus – NIKKI the Traveling Library! Our hope is that the library serves as more than just a collection of books; that through your engagement this community-centered initiative provides more access to knowledge and diverse perspectives you’re curious about.

What is NIKKI the Traveling Library?

NIKKI is a curated collection of books, zines, and journals that explore a wide range of subjects at the intersection of identity, community, and justice. From Disability Justice to Colonialism to Inclusive Leadership, our selection covers a wide array of topics that will enlighten, challenge, and inspire.

How does it work?

Whether it's finding a temporary home in a department, popping up at a special event, or a book you pick-up, when you stop by our office, there will be many ways to access and engage with NIKKI. The Ed Team will tailor a selection of books based on the hosting unit's focus or the event's theme, ensuring that the content is always relevant.

Engage and Explore

Want to dive into a new book on intersectional feminism? Interested in learning more about inclusive leadership? Thinking about indigeneity and sovereignty? Interested in having NIKKI at an upcoming event? Drop by in person, request NIKKI, or explore our digital catalog to see what's on our shelves and check out books with ease.

NIKKI is more than just a borrowing service; it's an invitation to engage with ideas, spark conversations, and be a part of a vibrant learning community.

Why NIKKI (Giovanni)?

When deciding on a name for our mobile library, we sought inspiration from individuals who have profoundly impacted the world of literature and activism. Nikki Giovanni, an esteemed poet, writer, and activist, stood out as a beacon of inspiration.

Nikki Giovanni's work is a celebration of Black culture, identity, and the human spirit. Her poetry and writings are infused with themes of social justice, love, and the unyielding strength of the Black community. Giovanni's voice has been a critical force in the Civil Rights Movement and continues to resonate with people across generations and backgrounds.

By naming our library NIKKI, we honor Nikki Giovanni's legacy and commitment to using the power of words to inspire change and foster a more accepting and just society. We hope that the NIKKI Mobile Library will serve as a space for reflection, learning, and connection, much like the work of its namesake.
