Hamid Hasani is a PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical Engineering in the McCormick School of Engineering. He is extensively engaged in innovating new programmable display and imaging technologies, pushing the envelope in the fields of optics, computational imaging, and engineering. His work has significant implications in creating immersive digital experiences, advancing virtual and augmented reality applications, and promoting tools for high-speed imaging of brain’s neuronal activity in microscopy.

How would you describe your research and/or work to a non-academic audience?
In simpler terms, I work on creating advanced programmable 3D displays and imaging systems. These innovative technologies are built to improve how we visualize and interact with digital information, with an aim to create immersive and engaging experiences that make digital content more accessible to everyone.

What have been some of the most memorable twists and turns of your career?
Transitioning from a background in mechanical engineering to electrical engineering has been a significant turn in my career. This allowed me to delve into a world of innovation and exploration in display technology. Another significant twist was my research internship at Meta Platforms, where I was able to further my expertise and gain hands-on experience in AR/VR technologies.

Participating in the Business Administration and Management certificate program at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management also helped me cultivate a broader skillset, enabling me to navigate the complexities of research, innovation, and collaboration more effectively in both academic and industry settings. Additionally, it equipped me with essential business and leadership skills.

Tell us what inspired your research and/or work.
My inspiration for research and work in display and imaging systems originated from my fascination with the intersection of technology and human perception. I am driven by the potential of these technologies to enhance and redefine the way people interact with digital information, media, and their environment. Furthermore, the continuous advancements and discoveries in this field present an exciting challenge that motivates me to push the boundaries and contribute to the development of innovative solutions that can improve user experiences and make a tangible impact on people's lives.

What is a mistake you have learned from in your career?
One valuable lesson I learned was the importance of clear and effective communication in a team setting, particularly when working on complex projects. This realization taught me that to avoid misunderstandings and to increase efficiency, it's essential to foster open and transparent communication and ensure that all team members are aligned.

Whom do you admire in your field and otherwise, and why?
In my field, I admire Professor Joseph W. Goodman for his significant contributions to Fourier optics and his ability to effectively communicate complex concepts. Outside my field, I greatly respect Elon Musk for his visionary approach, tireless work ethic, and ability to drive innovation across multiple industries.

What do you find both rewarding and challenging about your research and/or work?
The most rewarding aspect of my research is the opportunity to contribute to technological advancements and the potential of these to significantly improve our lives. However, the challenge lies in the need for continuous learning and adaptation, as technology is rapidly evolving. Staying at the forefront of advancements and maintaining a competitive edge requires hard work and commitment.

I chose Northwestern for its reputation as a top-notch research institution with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration. Northwestern's faculty are world-class experts in their fields, providing a stimulating and enriching academic environment for growth and development. Additionally, Northwestern is in a suburb of Chicago. I thoroughly enjoy living in this vibrant city, with its rich cultural scene, and ample opportunities for various activities. It provides a perfect balance between a rigorous academic life and an enriching personal experience.

How do you unwind after a long day?
After a long day, I like to unwind by engaging in activities that help me relax, recharge and staying physically active. This often includes spending time with friends and family, going to the gym, or indulging in a favorite hobby such as photography or playing soccer.

What books are on your bedside table?
Resting on my bedside table is an eclectic assortment of books, each serving as a testament to my wide array of interests. You'll discover insightful finance texts such as The Intelligent Investor, enlightening historical narratives like A History of Modern Iran, and inspiring leadership-focused works such as On Becoming a Leader. Additionally, I delve into religious exploration with books that delve into Islam and Sufism. Not to be forgotten, my interest in style and fashion is also represented through various insightful texts.

How would your closest friends describe you?
 My closest friends identify me as ambitious, dedicated, and perpetually open to new experiences. They enjoy my sense of humor and my unwavering commitment to our brotherhood. In a fun-loving riff on my muscular build and unyielding determination, my friends like to call me "The Bull." They jest that I've got a mind forged of steel - probably because they've seen me headbutt too many challenges and come out unscathed!

What did you originally want to be when you grew up?
Growing up, I aspired to become a soccer player, primarily inspired by my admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and Arjen Robben. Their skill, determination, and success on the field motivated me to pursue a career in professional sports, and I likely enjoyed playing soccer as a means of emulating their achievements.

What advice would you give your younger self or someone considering a similar path?
I would say to stay curious and open-minded, as it's essential to explore various interests and opportunities. Embrace the challenges and be prepared to learn from your failures, as they are valuable experiences that will shape your future success. Always prioritize building a strong foundation in the subjects you're passionate about, and actively seek out mentors who can guide and support you along the way. And most importantly, never lose sight of your dreams and goals, but be flexible and adaptable, as your path may take unexpected turns that lead to even more rewarding experiences.

Tell us about a time when things did not go as you planned, what did you learn?
During my early stages at Northwestern, I took on a challenging project that involved multiple disciplines. Despite my thorough planning, I faced numerous unforeseen obstacles and delays. Initially, this was frustrating, but I learned that in research, and life in general, we cannot predict or control everything. Adapting to changes, embracing uncertainty, and persevering through difficulties are crucial skills. It's essential to maintain resilience, stay solution-oriented, and keep our long-term goals in perspective.  

What are you most proud of in your career to date?
I am most proud of my contributions to the development of novel holographic display technologies during my time as a PhD candidate at Northwestern University. In addition, I'm proud of my time as a research intern at Meta Platforms, where I worked on applications in AR/VR head-mounted displays. This internship not only validated my research skills but also provided me with a taste of industry experience, reaffirming my passion for applying academic research to real-world problems.

Being able to make a tangible impact in the field of electrical engineering and having the opportunity to collaborate with talented individuals in multidisciplinary teams have been the highlights of my career thus far. ­
