Margarita Williams '27

Margarita Williams is a third-year student at Northwestern University majoring in journalism and history and minoring in film and media studies. Originally from Rockville, Maryland, she is a Mellon Mays fellow and a former Leopold fellow in Northwestern’s Department of History, where she explored Northwestern's history of race and medicine. Margarita’s research interests include the Black diaspora, Black Renaissance, and the ways political and socioeconomic issues are embedded in artistic expression. She is also interested in how art evolves over time to serve as a historical archive for communities of color. Margarita plans to pursue a PhD in American history and become a university professor. She hopes to cultivate academic spaces that nurture radical thought. On campus, Margarita contributes as an arts and entertainment writer for North by Northwestern magazine, is the vice president of Chapter Relations of the National Association of Black Journalists, and works for the NU Admissions team. In her free time, she enjoys thrifting, live concerts, lavender lattes, beach outings, and running a music blog on Instagram.
