Second-year student Katie Fu majors in neuroscience. Outside of class, she is involved with the Northwestern Prison Education Program (NPEP), where she works to expand educational opportunities for incarcerated individuals. This summer, Katie will use the Clark and Hinman Foundation Fellowship to work as an intern for NPEP, where she will provide in-person academic support for students during study halls, help provide reentry support, and create an inventory of donated books to establish library resources in the correctional facilities. Her interest in civil service began in high school during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she started volunteering with Learn To Be to provide free, online tutoring to underserved K–12 students nationwide.
