Weinberg senior bound for Egypt with university fellowship

The Office of Fellowships is thrilled to announce that Carter Rothman (WCAS ’20) has been chosen for the 2020–2021 cohort of the Presidential Associates Program at the American University in Cairo! Next year in Egypt, Carter will work for the university while continuing his Arabic studies.

Carter is a senior from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, majoring in political science and international studies. Last year, he was recognized for academic excellence by the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences with the James Alton Carter RothmanJames Award, given to top juniors in the social sciences.

Carter is also involved in Northwestern’s chapter of UNICEF, a student group that raises awareness about humanitarian issues affecting children around the world. He helped organize fundraisers and lectures during his sophomore year and was chosen as the club’s marketing chair the following year. He finished his time with the organization as its co-president.

In addition to his activities on Northwestern’s Evanston campus, Carter studied abroad in Amman, Jordan, during the summer of 2018. After completing his fellowship, Carter plans to pursue a career in the foreign service or the humanitarian field.

The Presidential Associates Program places recipients in a full-time position in an American University in Cairo The American University in Cairo logo(AUC) office or department that aligns with their professional and academic interests. Through their work, associates gain substantive skills and professional experience that will contribute to the AUC community and their own professional development. Past associates have used the knowledge and networks that they develop during the program to progress their careers and pursue opportunities in the fields of government, higher education, academia, journalism and law.
