Creative writer secures funding for master's degree in Ireland

The Office of Fellowships is excited to announce that Mahito Indi Henderson (SoC '20) has been chosen for the 2020–2021 cohort of the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships! This academic year, Mahito will pursue his master’s degree in creative writing at University College Cork, in Cork, Ireland.

Mahito HendersonHailing from Boulder, Colorado, Mahito graduated with a double major in radio/television/film and English (creative writing) while also completing a minor in art theory and practice. During his time at Northwestern, Mahito received a 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for a practice-based study that included oil paintings, sketches, sculpture, and short story vignettes entitled “A Cat Called Kush: Studies on Harmony and Dialogue Across Media.”  The project culminated in an exhibition held in a gallery space on campus and was selected first overall in the creative arts category of the 2020 Undergraduate Research Exposition and Creative Arts Festival.

Mahito interned with IFP Chicago (now IFA Chicago) through the Summer Internship Grant Program and was selected for a 2017 Media Arts Grant to direct a short film he wrote, Final Sprint. The film was shot in Evanston and screened at the Media Arts Grant premiere in 2018. Mahito also graduated from Second City’s Improv Program, played ice hockey for NU’s men’s club team, set designed multiple shows for Mee-Ow Comedy, and worked on student films and NSTV projects.

In addition to the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships, Mahito’s honors and awards include Lambda Pi Eta (National Communication Association honors society), the 2019–2020 Berger Munishor Scholarship, and the 2017–2018 Harold and Margaret Struble Scholarship.

Higher Education Authority logoThe Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships will fund sixty students for one year of study at the bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD levels at an eligible Irish higher education institution. The award is open to students from non-EU/EEA countries and is applicable to all fields of study. The scholarship provides a €10,000 stipend and full fee waiver of all tuition and other registration costs at the chosen school.
