Brady Scholar secures support for graduate study in England

The Office of Fellowships is pleased to announce that Kendall Clark (WCAS ’23) has been chosen as the 2023 recipient of the Boye Oxbridge Bursary! Next year, Kendall will travel to England to earn a graduate degree at the University of Oxford.

Kendall was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated this year from Weinberg College as a major in German language and culture, with a minor in computer science. As a sophomore, Kendall became a Brady Scholar for Ethics and Civic Life, which introduced her to philosophical frameworks for thinking through social interactionsPhoto of Kendall Clark and community organizing. She spent her junior year in language-immersive study at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, in Freiburg, Germany.

Kendall was drawn to Oxford for the same reason that beckoned her to Northwestern: the commitment to interdisciplinary courses of study. Growing up, Kendall always enjoyed solving math and logic puzzles, while her Black heritage made history, policy, and social justice incredibly salient as well. Her time as an intern with the Institute for the Quantitative Study of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity—in addition to her work as an ethics fellow in the Department of Computer Science—inspired her curiosity about how human rights issues can extend into digital platforms. Kendall is excited to continue exploring these ideas at Exeter College while studying to earn a master’s degree in social data science at the Oxford Internet Institute.

Northwestern alums who had worked with Medill Associate Professor Emeritus-in-Service Roger Boye (pictured at left) through his tenure as chair of the British Scholarship Committee in the Office of Fellowships sought to honor his unstinting support with an award for a similarly devoted Wildcat embarking on graduate study at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge.

Kendall is the fifteenth recipient of the Boye Bursary and will receive $1000 toward her school expenses.
