Compass Mentor Application

Program Background

Compass Mentors work with first-year students to support their mentees in navigating Northwestern, accessing resources, and building community. Mentors do this by facilitating one-on-one meetings and facilitating Compass Friday programming i.e. workshops and community events. Compass Mentors begin supporting their mentees in the Fall quarter through the end of the academic year.   

Responsibilities

  • Community Building 
    • Create a welcoming, engaging, and amiable environment amongst Compass participants 
    • Desire to foster community  
    • Aspire to serve as a role model and mentor  
  • Mentorship 
    • Provide support to a pod of 3-4 mentees throughout the academic year 
    • Coordinate and facilitate bi-weekly 1:1 meeting with each mentee to provide mentorship 
    • Develop respectful relationships through intentional interactions with students  
    • Offer encouragement, support, and general guidance on the Northwestern experience 
  • Compass Programming 
    • Support Compass Programming including but not limited to: Kick-Off, Pod Reveal, Pod Hangout, and End of Year (EOY) Celebration 
    • Lead, develop, and facilitate weekly programming for Compass Fridays i.e. workshops and community events (2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) 
  • Compass Mentor Development  
    • Attend weekly Wednesday Mentor Meetings (4:00 pm – 5:30 pm) 
    • Participate in bi-weekly one-on-one supervisor meetings with SES AD and/or Compass GA 
    • Attend weekly Compass working team meetings to create and facilitate programming for Compass Fridays 

**during Compass Fridays mentors are expected to reset the space being occupied which requires some form of physical labor (i.e. moving boxes, setting up tables/chairs and other equipment etc.) if this is a barrier, please let the SES AD 

Important Dates

  • Compass Orientation | Friday, September 19th – Saturday 20th, 2025 
  • Compass Fridays | October 10th, 2025 – May 16th, 2026 
  • Compass Wednesday Mentor Meetings | September 25th, 2025 – May 20th, 2026 

Qualifications

  • Must be a rising 2nd, 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student at Northwestern  
  • Must have 3.0 GPA at the time of application   
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic and non-academic standing 
  • Must be on-campus for the 2025-2026 academic year (students with a local practicum/JR are eligible) 
  • Demonstrate strong interest in the support and development of FGLI college students 

Compensation

Mentors will be paid hourly at a $16 rate. Hours worked will vary but an estimate of 10 to 15 hours a week.

Please note that the SES Mentor Application includes the SAW Counselor and Compass Mentor positions. SES oversees the Summer Academic Workshop (SAW), a summer bridge program that shares similar goals to the Compass program-supporting FGLI students through their first-year transition to Northwestern University. You will be able to select whether you are applying for one or both positions.  

Applying involves 3 steps:  

  1. Complete the SES Mentor Application   
  2. Participate in a Group Interview Process  
  3. If selected, applicants will continue in the interview process and will be scheduled for an individual interview! 

Application

The SES Mentor application collects basic information and has an essay portion. Once the application is submitted you will receive a confirmation email. Please read this email carefully as it provides instructions for a group interview. Below are the essay questions.  

Essay Questions  

  1. Tell us why you want to be a Compass Mentor and/or a SAW Counselor. (150 words)   
  2. Please share your definition of peer mentorship? Why is it beneficial for a first-year student to receive mentorship during their first year at Northwestern? (200 words)    
  3. Write to a new student about an experience that challenged you during your first year at Northwestern. Please include what you learned and what you would want this new student to take away from your experience. (300 words)   

 

Group Interview

The Group Interviews are scheduled for: 

  • Wednesday, April 15th | 11:30 am – 12:45 pm CST 
  • Monday, April 21st | 3:45 pm – 5:00 pm CST 
  • Tuesday, April 22nd | 3:35 pm – 5:00 pm CST 

You can select the session you are unavailable for when you complete the SES Mentor Application. During the group interview you will complete 2 group activities. One will focus on group dynamics and the other on creativity. 

Individual Interviews

Applicants selected to continue in our interview process will be scheduled for an individual interview during the week May 6th – May 14th, 2025. Final selections will be shared via email the week of May 19th, 2025.
