SafeRide began in the late 1980s as a walking escort service called Student Escort Services. The Naval ROTC provided volunteers to walk students between destinations on campus at night. In 1992 ASG took over the service and in 1993 bikes were provided for the escorts to get to students' locations faster. Eventually, in the late 1990s, the University provided 3 cars, eliminating the walking escorts. In the fall of 2006, Student Escort Services was renamed to SafeRide. 2007 marked the year of the first Prius vehicles, as SafeRide acquired 6 of them as well as 1 handicap accessible van. The SafeRide fleet was increased to its current size of 8 Prii and 1 handicap accessbile van between 2010 and 2012. Today, Auxillary Services heads SafeRide and is run by friendly student employees.
