2019-20 One Book Selection

"Hidden Figures" by Margot Lee Shetterly

"Hidden Figures" is the true story of the black women mathematicians at NASA who helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space. In the book, Shetterly celebrates these unsung heroes, teasing out issues of race, gender, science and innovation against the backdrop of WWII and the Civil Rights Era.

 Overview

Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly is Northwestern University’s One Book One Northwestern all-campus read for the 2019-20 academic year. For the first time this year, all first-year and transfer students will receive an eBook copy over the summer. The author of the book, Margot Lee Shetterly, will be on campus October 17 at both the Chicago and Evanston campuses.

Heather Pinkett, an associate professor of molecular biosciences in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and Teresa Woodruff, dean of The Graduate School, will serve at faculty co-chairs this year. This book will provide the foundation for dozens of events throughout the upcoming academic year.

Student Fellows and Ambassadors

The One Book fellows and ambassadors are integral to the running of the One Book program. The fellows are paid to help run the office on a weekly basis by working on the newsletter, website, social media and marketing.  The ambassadors assist with events throughout the academic year as needed.  All students contribute to the blog and are readers of several books for the selection of next year’s common read program.
