Books & Breakfast: Fuel Minds, Feed Futures
Want to add regular service into your routine and make a real local impact? Become a Books & Breakfast volunteer tutor!! B&B serves 200+ Evanston elementary students across 7 schools every week. We make sure kids start their day with a warm meal and the confidence to crush their schoolwork.
B&B is an education equity program working in partnership with the Evanston school system addressing the impact of historic systemic racism.
Why It Matters
- Fuel & Focus: Kids get a nutritious breakfast and morning homework help.
- Social-Emotional Support: You provide mentorship and a caring environment.
- Local Impact: Connect your education to real-world community development right here in Evanston.
The Skinny
- Program runs 8-9am every weekday morning, volunteers serve one day per week
- Location is 7 Evanston elementary schools
- Free CTA passes are provided to commute on local busses/trains to B&B
- 200+ kids served weekly (Kindergarten - 5th grade)
- 400+ NU student volunteers involved (goal is 1-1 ratio of adult to child)
- Spanish speakers are especially needed
The Process
Fall 2026 required onboarding is scheduled for Friday, September 25 in Annenberg G15
Session Times (you only need to attend one in-person session out of the three offered)
- 3:00 pm
- 4:00 pm
- 5:00 pm
New volunteers MUST ATTEND the in-person MANDATORY onboarding session at the start of the quarter.
*If you miss the Fall Onboarding you must wait until the start of the winter quarter to get involved as a new volunteer.
