Northwestern Office of the Provost

Faculty Newsletter | October 2025

Dear faculty,

Since sharing the news last week that I will step down from my role of Provost by the end of the academic year, I have received many heartfelt wishes from colleagues across the University  yet another reminder of how wonderful this community is. I have been unable to reply to all the messages, so I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude.

First, thank you to the fantastic deans and faculty leaders who have been my partners over the past several years, showing true leadership, wisdom and vision. You have always kept the best interests of the University at the forefront of all decisions we have made together.

To all our faculty, thank you for consistently demonstrating excellence and for your service to the University. I have said it before and I will continue to say it: You are the backbone of this University, and I am so proud of what you have accomplished together. Every day, you make a huge difference in the lives of our students while making the world better. Northwestern is a special place because of you.

The kind of place that produces Nobel Prize winners! Congratulations to Joel Mokyr!

While we are on the topic of all the great things our faculty do, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that nominations and applications are open for three Office of the Provost Awards: the Daniel I. Linzer Award for Faculty Excellence in Service; the Alumnae of Northwestern University Award for Curriculum Innovation; and the Open Educational Resources Faculty Grant.

Once again, thank you for your many contributions. But this is not goodbye. We still have much to accomplish together.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost
First Chicago Professor of Finance

News and notes

Search committee for new Provost

Northwestern appointed a search committee for a new Provost made up of a wide range of faculty members. Kellogg School of Management Dean Francesca Cornelli is the chair of the committee, which will immediately begin its work to identify a slate of candidates, with a goal of naming the new Provost by Winter Quarter. The search will focus on internal candidates, and the committee invites nominations of tenured Northwestern faculty members. The committee will solicit input from stakeholders, including the desired attributes and experiences of the Provost. Members of the University community are invited to share their perspectives and/or recommend candidates by emailing nuprovostsearch@northwestern.edu.

Federal immigration presence in Chicago area

Last month, the University posted resources related to the Department of Homeland Security announcement of increased federal immigration presence in the Chicago area. The guidance from that message remains in place. Additionally, the Office of International Students and Scholar Services has resources for international students and scholars, and Northwestern is closely monitoring and responding to federal actions.
