Title: Why Do Animals Count?
Description: Under the auspices of Northwestern University's Philosophy Department and Residential Colleges, and in coordination with the One Book One Northwestern Program, Professor Jon Garthoff asks you (and proposes an answer to), Why Do Animals Count? There are a variety of interesting and pressing questions about the treatment of animals, such as: Is it wrong to kill animals for food? In what ways may animals be used in scientific research? How do answers to these questions affect the responsibilities of consumers? In this talk, however, I take on a different and more abstract question: In virtue of what do animals merit our concern? This is to ask, more colloquially: Why do animals count? Or to ask, more technically: Why do animals have moral standing? I put forward an answer to this question which does not directly settle more concrete questions about the treatment of animals, but which can inform our answers to them, and can also inform our understanding of human moral standing. Reception to follow in Kresge 2-345
