One Book One Northwestern

2023-24 One Book One Selection Announced

 “Crying in H Mart,” the memoir that made indie pop artist Michelle Zauner a rockstar author, has been named the One Book One Northwestern selection for 2023-2024.

Best known as the singer and guitarist who creates dreamy, shoegaze-inspired indie pop under the name Japanese Breakfast, Zauner became a bestselling author in 2021 when her book about the loss of her mother, their shared love for Korean food and being biracial as an Asian American rocketed to the top of the New York Times Bestsellers list. History and Asian American Studies Professor Ji-Yeon Yuh will be the One Book faculty Chair. Zauner will be on both the Chicago and Evanston campuses October 18, 2023. More details to follow.

2022-23 One Book Selection

"How the Word is Passed" by Clint Smith

One Book One Northwestern is pleased to announce that the One Book selection for 2022-2023 is How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with The History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith. In How the Word Is Passed, Smith presents both historical research and interviews with ordinary people at historic sites, thus painting a picture both of history and a variety of people’s contemporary — and often inaccurate — understandings of it. Smith will be on the Chicago and Evanston campus in conversation with history professor and One Book faculty chair Leslie M. Harris on October 18th.

Student Fellows and Ambassadors

The One Book fellows and ambassadors are integral to the running of the One Book program. The fellows are paid to help run the office on a weekly basis by working on the newsletter, website, social media and marketing.  The ambassadors assist with events throughout the academic year as needed.  All students contribute to the blog and are readers of several books for the selection of next year’s common read program.
