Michael Legatt is an adjunct professor within Northwestern's Master of Science in Energy and Sustainability (MSES) Program.
Mike Legatt is the founder and CEO of ResilientGrid, a company that provides situational awareness software and services focusing on the electric utility control room. Mike works to combine his background and PhDs in Energy Systems Engineering and Clinical Health Psychology/Neuropsychology to look at the real-time operations of the grid holistically, ensuring that system operators are set up for reliability and resilience from normal to emergency to recovery operations.
Mike regularly presents at energy industry and government events about the impact of organizational culture and the importance of optimizing human-computer interaction within complex socio-technical systems, including emerging areas such as cybersecurity and the integration of Generative AI, and he has contributed to several articles, research projects, and books on the subject. Mike is the lead author of NERC’s Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Real-Time System Operations white paper.
Mike also co-founded the Human Performance Community of Practice, a group of professionals in the electric utility industry, academia, and human performance professionals, experts, and enthusiasts to facilitate continuous improvement of human performance in critical infrastructure.
Prior to his role at ResilientGrid, Mike spent ten years as the principal human factors engineer for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), developing technologies and systems to improve the reliability of the grid, strengthening situational awareness and transmission operations as the grid’s complexity grew through several successive growth phases.
