Sesqui-Bashes in D.C., Chicago

Northwestern rolled out the purple carpet for alumni in Washington, D.C., while everyone enjoyed fireworks in Chicago — all part of the continuing Sesquicentennial celebration.

On May 20 more than 300 alumni in the nation's capital gathered at the elegant Cosmos Club on Embassy Row for a reception commemorating the University's 150th birthday.

The party featured entertainers from the Music Theatre Program, who gave an extra performance that evening because of the high alumni turnout. Attendees also viewed exhibits on University history and enjoyed the highly prized packets of purple-and-white M&Ms.

Exactly one month later more than 1,000 alumni gathered on a delightful evening at Chicago's Navy Pier for more Sesqui-festivities. The guests, who represented a wide variety of years and schools at the University, flowed from the Grand Ballroom to the pier's outdoor plaza, socializing and enjoying the music, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Stu Hirsh (Mu76, GMu82) and his orchestra, which includes several alumni among its ranks, provided dance music for the event. After singing rousing renditions of the alma mater and fight song, partygoers were treated to the sight of 1,000 purple and gold balloons falling from the ceiling.

Capping off the evening was a fireworks display that was enhanced by the pier's dramatic view of the Chicago skyline.
